Bull Run Characters

Bull Run, by Paul Fleischmann is a story about many different characters and their perspective on the events surrounding the first Battle of Bull Run. The first question for you, the reader, is what do you think some of the differences between characters will be? In other words, what will be different about the characters?

Think about Northerners, Southerners, and people in general. Share your ideas about what you think will be characteristics of different characters. We'll brainstorm along in the blog and then see what types of people Paul Fleischmann created. Thanks for sharing your ideas. KT56

  1. We were brainstorming and JP came up with the idea of winner and losers. In other words, the Confederates won the battle and the Union lost. I think Fleischmann might work that in. What other ideas? What about people that are healthy and sick? Maybe someone who fought at Fort Sumter? Another JP idea!

    Keep thinking!

  2. I think that some of the characters will be people from the north and the south, weather they are soldiers or civilians. I think it will take place over a time piriod of a few days. I think it will be about different soldiers and officers but it will come back to each one over time. I know that the south won the battle so that is my reasoning for sentences 1 and 3. I am looking forward to reading and learning about Bull Run.

    1. You hit on some important ideas, the fact that soldiers from different sides might have different perspectives. It will be interesting to see how the setting changes, I forgot to ask that question! Thanks for posting. FK

  3. The differences between characters

There will be different ages and genders. He will write about people on both sides North and South.

I think the book will be about how the people in the Bull Run fought and how they felt about it. Also I think it will show and be about important people like Abe Lincoln and the generals and the soldiers. I also think it will show how much money people earned and had back then and people liking and not liking people.

    1. Good ideas GB. I wonder about the important people like the president. His perspective might already be known, PF tends to speak for the less well known folks.

Money might come into the story as well. Do you think rich people fight in as many wars as poor people?

      Thanks for posting. FK

That post made me think about how each side hated each other. I wonder how the'll react to each other in the book.

  4. I think that Fleischman will write from characters of the north and the south’s perspectives. I think maybe, just maybe, he might just wright from Abraham Lincoln’s perspective. Fleischman probably will write about people who are wealthy and people who are poor. Probably he wrote about big people and small people.

    1. You certainly have the north vs. south perspective going. Rich and poor will be interesting, we'll have to look out for that. Big and small people, do you different ages? I wonder what a kid would say about the Battle? What about an older person? Thanks for sharing your ideas, we'll see how accurate you are soon. FK

  5. I think that the author will have many different characters like most books do. Like the author might include ages, skin colors, sizes, genders and what there job might be and the life style. People might be from the north and the south and they might be a soldier. A lot of the characters could speak different languages like everyone around us. I am a little excited to learn about all of these different characters and see how they are alike and different and if anyone is like us. Even though everyone in the world is different in there own way it is still fun to see how the may be different.

    1. Good ideas MB. You are right about all books having different characters, at the same point, you are right that they have things in common too. It can be hard to notice those similarities some times. Different languages, reminds me of Fighting Ground. We'll have to wait and see. Nice work, FK

  6. The Confederate won and the Union lost. All that Lincoln cares about is the Union, not the slaves. Thousands of soldiers died on the battlefield, while the people watched this gory battle.Lincoln started the war because of his speech by speaking his mind. This speech could have affected American history. On farms slaves did most of the work. Some farmers are lazy or hard workers. The Union invaded the Confederate territory.

    1. Jacob,
I like the way you used your words. I also like your G.U.M. My favorite sentence was when you said "Thousands of soldiers died on the battlefield, while the people watched this gory battle. I like tat because of what the war was like and what people thought of it.

    2. jacob,
he did speak his mind and that helped start the was but he did not completely start it. It was that the Confederates wanted their freedom.

  8. Well most of the characters in many stories are different. Like in Paul Fleischmann’s book Bull Run a new character is introduced in every chapter like in one chapter the author could put in a short southerner or a tall northerner, winner, loser, and they all have different personality. Some of the soldiers even brought their own slave to the battle field! Different ages, genders, jobs and even more money and power. This is what I predict of how characters are alike in ways and different in Bull Run. That is why I am excited to read this book.

  10. The characters appear somewhat different from one another. A new character seems to be in every chapter, and they are mostly soldiers and civilians. On a more personal note, I have actually been to Fort Sumter before, I was down in Charleston, South Carolina and I saw it, it actually looks like it's in the middle of the ocean. If you wanted, you could swim out to it, but I wouldn't enjoy that very much. As I continue to read it i find it harder to put down. I think I will like this book a lot!

    1. Hi Matt, Thanks for joining the blog. Yes, the characters are quite different, as you move through the book you'll see the characters come back again as well. An interesting format. I wonder if any of the characters will meet each other.

I've wondered about why Fleishman (the author) structured the book that way. One of his other books uses the same format. It does draw you in.

That's cool that you've been to Ft. Sumter. Did your memories help you imagine being there, watching the battle?

Glad you like the story, thanks again for posting.

  11. The difference of people of the South, North or in general is great. The people of the South are looking for independence so they can practice whatever they want to practice and do what ever the want to do. They don't want to have to avid by the constitution. The North wants America to stay together. They want to abolish slavery. This is one of things that the South wants the right to practice. I believe the characters from both sides will fight desperately to win. They are both doing what they think is right. I predict the people of the North will not be as judging as the people of the South. I think this because the Southern people believe black people are inferior. That is what they believe. The North thinks he opposite. They think that blacks are equals, as the constitution stated. I also think the people of the South will fight for their home, family and life as they know it. This is how the had always lived. It would be hard to give this up. The people of the North are fighting for freedom. This is a major cause as well. They want to be free of slavery. They fight for what is right, not what they are used to. I think that the Southern people would be very stuck in their ways and not very open to new ideas. I believe the Northern characters will be more conscious of right and wrong. They will also be more interested in developing a new country by way of unity. The regular people who do not have a major opinion, the bystander, or even the innocent people in the cross fire, what do they think? I think that those characters will not care about the outcome of the war. They just don't want anyone they know to get hurt be because of it. Nether the less, these people still will get hurt. Think these characters will be very prone to do whatever it takes to survive; it doesn't matter if it is right or wrong. It is people like these who might get in the the way of the two warring sides.

    1. Hi Maci,
Thanks for posting. The State's Right argument was an important part of the debate before the war. The slavery question was certainly pushing that along. The Constitution stated "all men are created equal, but that meant all white men. Others had to fight for their rights.

It's hard to "watch" or read about people acting so strongly on their beliefs. Strong convictions.

We've been discussing how not all the Southerners believed in slavery, just as not all the Northerners did not oppose it.

I like your question about the bystanders, the common folks who saw houses raided, crops destroyed, and watched people suffer. Bull Run gives up some insight into their thoughts.

Thanks again for responding, enjoy the book.

  13. The difference between the North and the South was that the South wanted to keep slavery and the North wanted to get rid of it. The North also had more soldiers.

    1. Thanks for joining the conversation Beka. You are right about the slavery differences. Not everyone was for it in the South, and not all the Northerns wanted it to end. We'll see some different perspectives.
