Colonel Oliver Brattle Entry

Colonel Oliver Brattle starts the story with an interesting perspective on the Battle of Fort Sumter.

What is Colonel Brattle's initial opinion of the war? What is that perspective based on? Share your thoughts and refer back to the chapter as often as possible.

What about Vernon? What is his perspective? We don't know much about him, so explain your perspective thoroughly.

  1. Colonel Oliver perspective on fort Sumter was that the cannons firing at it woke up everyone and "Woke the dishes and set them chattering". And that is the Colonel's interesting prospective on the battle of Fort Sumter.

  2. Colonel Oliver Brattle did not like war, for his opinion. Brattle's perspective is that he doesn't think war is necessary, and wondering why people think war is interesting, fun, and exciting.
Vernon I guess was in the battle with Brattle. The only thing I really know about him is that he smiled when he caught Brattle gazing at him and he smiled and his smile was like a snake.
Brattle also woke up at four in the morning, with dishes rattling and he went to see if his children where okay, thats when he went outside to see what was going on.

    1. Hi Willow,
Your idea that Vernon was in the battle with Colonel Brattle is an interesting one. I wonder if we will learn more about the Mexican - American War and Colonel Brattle's role in it. Colonel Brattle seems a little worried by the snakey smile.

  3. Colonel Brattle's opinion of the war is that it isn't necessary to fight. The Colonel was confused why every body was outside screaming and hollering early in the morning, with baskets of food. Fourteen years ago the Colonel fought, and he remembers what bullets do to the human flesh. Colonel Brattle seems pretty depressed and upset about the firing on Fort Sumpter.

  5. Colonel Oliver's perspective on the attack on fort Sumter is very different. Because he dose not have a good experience in the war...so he probably is scared or even worried....he's probably is not that happy to go to war.

  6. Colonel Oliver Brattle's perspective was based on fort Sumter. But what Colonel Brattle was thinking about what the heck is happening, are my kids ok, are they attacking fort Sumter. But also the Colonel found out that the firing was on the fort.
I think Vernon's perspective was that he would be freed from being a slave.

  7. Colonel brattle is happy to go to war because he wants to keep his slaves and succeed from the Union but, he is sad because he knows many people will die in this War.

  11. Paul Fleischman is great with all these sayings I bet Oliver does not think highly of the war.

  12. I agree with the fact that he didn't want to go to war.

  13. Colonel Brattle wasn't a fan of the war well he wasn't the fighting type for the war. He was probably mad about the people fighting for the slaves to be free. When he stepped outside onto Judge Frye's porch he heard all this screaming and yelling in the morning with baskets of food like they were going to a picnic at war! Fourteen years back he fought in the war and he remember bullets going through human flesh! He seems pretty sad about the war. Vernon was Colonel Brattle's slave and he is very happy about the war because people from the North are fighting for the African Americans freedom. But he doesn't want Colonel Brattle to see him smirking!

  14. He wants the war to happen but he does not want any one to die why he thanks that is because he was at war for 14 years and he knows what shell did to living skin. So he would like if the war happend but people did not die. Then he lookes at his slave and he can telll that the slave is vary happy about the war because if the north wins he is free so if you where a slave you would be a little bite happy that your going to be free but you can't let you oner konw or then thay will get mad and do some stuff th them.

  15. He supported the south but he also was sad because he doesn't want people to die. The colonel has seen what happens in war because he fought in a war.

Vernon is a slave. He hopes the war will free him. He can't let the Colonel see him smile because his master might whip him.

  17. Colonel Oliver Brattle isn't glad that cannons are firing at Fort Sumter. Vernon, Colonel Oliver Brattle's body servant, had a slimmest of smiles that fled his lips and he is probably thinking the if the north wins,I might be free.

  18. I think that Brattles view on the war is that he wants the south to win because he lives there and he is a slave owner. His views are based on his experience in the Mexican American war and his recollection of when flesh and shells mix. Vernon wants to be free so he wants the north to win. That is why he was smiling when Brattle looked at him.

  19. I think that colonel Oliver's prescriptive on the Civil War is that, it is not that good. For he has seen what shells do to living flesh. As he watches the attack of fort Sumter, on top of Judge Frye's flat roof other people cheer and bring up picnic baskets he sits and just watches. So I think he is not happy about the war.
Vernon on the other hand is probably happy about the Civil war, because people are fighting for his rights.

  20. I think Colonel Brattle's perspective on the civil war is that he thinks it is bad. He watches the attack of fort sumpter on Judge Frye's roof as other people bring picnic baskets. He has seen what the shells do to flesh. Thats why I think he doesn't like the war.
I think Vernon likes the war because other people are fighting for his rights.

  21. He has a personal body gaurd Vernon is happy about the war because maybe he is thinking his master will be shot. Then he will be free so Oliver Brattle might want t watch his back well he sleeps what do you think? Also Oliver Brattle I really belive that after the Mexico War he does not think highly of it. He knows what shells do to living flesh he must not think highly of it.

  22. I think that Colonel Oliver Brattle is not that happy because he thinks he might loose his slaves.
I think that Vernon is grateful for the battle because he has a chance at being freed.
I also think that his friend are nervous because they might lose their slaves or even be killed!
I'm really excited to read more about Colonel Oliver Brattle in the Bull Run.

  23. Yes I agree Kyle after the Mexico War and all. It said he was in it so he knows what shells do to living flesh. So most likey he did not like the war.

  24. Hi Kyle,
You tell us the basics, go further and tell us why you don't think he liked this fight.

(PS: I agree with you that I don't think he really like this fight.)

  25. Colonel Oliver got waken up by the attack of Fort Sumter. A man came to his door and said "Praise the day". He said Negros look similarly glum. I don't think he likes fighting.

  26. I think that Colonel Oliver Brattle's perspective on the civil war is maybe that he is against it. Because he obviously has slaves so he is with the idea of slavery. When the battle breaks out and if the north wins he will lose all his slaves that he relies on for every day life. So thats why I think the colonel is against the battle of the civil war.
On the other hand I think vernon is with the idea of the civil war so

  28. colonel brattle wakes up to hear the dishes chattering. He hears his maid scream, "must be the lord coming". "Their firing at Fort Sumpter"! Colonel brattle walks on to Judge Fryer's roof. The cannons shot and it looked like a fourth of July celebration. Colonel Brattle look's at vernon, and then he looks back. HIs smile disappered from his face. I think that Colonel Brattle isn't very keen on the war and that's why he said,"What shells do to a living flesh". And I also think that Vernon sorta like's the war because he has a 50-50 chance on being free.

  29. Great comment!!! but what do you think Vernon thinks.

  30. I agree with you Hannah that I don't think that Colonel brattle really likes the war because he has had different experinces with the war. I also agree with you that Vernon is in with the war because he want's to be free.

  31. Colonel brattle doesn't like the war for example when he woke up and went outside and everyone was celebrating he wasn't, he just remembered the mexican american war and what shells do to living flesh. Although he supports the confederacy he's not sure that he does not want to be a part of this war. When he glances at his body servant he sees a slim smile escape his mouth. because this war could free him of slavery. but why would you smile if people were getting killed

p.s. i know that no person was harmed at fort sumter

  32. I think that she dose not like the war. Because he dose not acted like he dose.
This is based on the war and a boy named... " Cononel Oliver" Who doesn't sound like he likes the War!

  33. Brattle doesn't like the thought of the shells bombing real people. He was in the Mexican War and he knows "what shells do to living flesh." This prevents him from celebrating with everyone else. He knows that it is killing people inside. His servant, Vernon, is questionable. He either has the same feeling as his master or is happy to see people die for his freedom. The later seems slightly less probital. If he has the same feeling as his master, when his master looked at him and his smile disappeared Brattle's looked told him that it is okay to feel that way. Or, the look could have told him to stop smiling because it was cruel and heartless. I don't know which, but both are possible. Either way, I know that Vernon knows his master very well. He knows what his "looks" mean. I also assume that Vernon is black like all the other servants.

  34. The Colonel describes it as a very loud noise that woke him up, and once he saw and heard what was happening at fort sumter, he was very startled. In my opinion, he seemed happy that they were firing on fort sumter because he said almost joyfully PRAISE THE DAY!! Then, they just watched what was going down there.

  35. colonel says that it is a canon that woke him up and someone came to his door saying praise the day

    1. Hey TM, You got the basics correct, why do you think he said, "Praise the day." Try to explain your idea a little more.
