    3. I think Toby thinks that the war is going to be a great time. His parents must have no idea where he is. I have a feeling that he doesn't know any more about fighting than he does about playing the fife. He might have "spirit", he might have "boldness", and he might have "pluck" but he is probably might need more than one miracle. War is not a nice place.

    5. Jonah back then it was almost every boy dreamed of war. Maybe not all of them want to kill a Yankee. I'm not a boy so I would not know but I think most did. Last year I read Mr,Lincolns drummer and those boys 10-17 wanted to go. Then a ten year old went as a musician. So Toby going as a musician is like that book. I predict that when he get his chance to kill a Yankee he's not gonna he said " I was 11 years old and desperate to kill a Yankee before the supply ran out.". I think like Willie in Mr,Lincolns drummer he will love to go home. What do you guys think?

  2. Toby Boyce's prospective on the war is join the band because he had the idea of going to the war and the band was the only way.

    1. I agree because even if that was the only thing to do he was about a step away from being in the actual war.

  3. I think he is a delusional silly fool because if he thinks he can last in the war when he is eleven he needs to rethink his life. He is so infected with determination that he will make up lies and embarrass himself to get in the army. He has a very strong and unusual perspective for a person his age. He obviously wants the Confederacy to win the war and the Union to die. His drivenness to kill a yankee led him to that perspective.

    2. Hey Nick maybe put more in but I agree too but he is really brave you should give him credit.

    3. I wonder with Toby where that determination comes from. In other words, what happened to make him have such a strong passion to not only hurt someone but to kill them? Either he knows nothing about killing and/ or death or he has a deep hatred based on something that happened. I wonder if he will see that Yankees or Northerners are people with opinions and views just like him.

    5. Brian I agree that it is scary to have Toby thinking he wants to kill somebody. I am not even 11 yet and I would never think of killing someone. I know if I knew Toby I would be so scared to be around him knowing he wants to kill a yankee. I think more than just Toby would want to kill someone back then because for them seeing their family in war they probably want to take a part in battle too.

  5. I think he is silly but most boys dream of war. He thinks war is fun and games heres a quote that makes me think that. " I was 11 years old and desperate to kill a Yankee before the supply ran out." Being on a farm or sitting in a house is boring. If the thought of going seeing sights by joining the war. what do you think?

  6. Toby's perspective on the War is very strange for a kid that is only 11 years old. He said that he want's to kill a yankee before the supply ran out. I have never met a 11 year old that wants to kill anything, let alone a person. I think that maybe his father was in the war before him and that might be why he wants to join too. When he told them he played a fife I thought he might run for it. But he said that,"It was the first miracle i'd ever seen," that makes me think that he made it in.

    5. Good quote, shows that you are reading. More thought needed to explain why that quote is important for you as well as important for the rest of us. Make some connections, explain your ideas, put yourself in his shoes. All of those would help.

From what I see, 11 year olds can't keep track of their pencils, could you imagine one of them in a battle!

      Delete
    6. At the same time, I think of child-soldiers. They are trained to carry weapons and follow orders at a very young age. The horrors and devastation they see has life-long implications.

I am glad 11 and 12 year olds are not in battle situations.

  8. I think that Toby's perspective on the war is very strong because he wants to kill a yankee at age eleven! I think that people in his family have had a strong opinion on the war and he led after them. I just think that he is a very courageous kid. He needed to find a way to kill a yankee or at least be in the war. When he found out that they need musicians to play while the march to battle. I

      Delete
    2. Avery, I think that what you said is true about his family having a very strong opinion about the war, but I think that he is crazy for wanting to kill someone. If his family always is talking about how they were in the war and that it was the most exciting and thrilling thing, he's going to hear that and then think that he is going to make it back alive, when he doesn't know that for sure. Yes he may be courageous but he isn't thinking before he actually goes through with it. If he needs to," kill a yankee before the supply runs out" then he is one crazy kid. He just thinks it is were he wants to be, which it might, but he isn't thinking it through.

  9. Toby Boyce, courageous kid or silly fool? What is going on with Toby? What is his perspective on the Civil War? What led him to that perspective?

Toby wants to go to War, he says, " Give us Dixie." He wants to fight for the South.

Mr. Kelley's question about Toy being courageous or a silly fool is confusing to me. What do you mean? I think he was courageous because he wants to go to War. He wants to protect his home land.

    1. Hey Falisha Toby does not say "Give Us Dixie" the sign up guy does here is the quote " A few minutes later the recruiter returned. He held out a fife. "Give us Dixie" he said" So the recruiter said "Give Us Dixie" Not Toby but he does say "Dixie" Thats all he says outloud. Also Falisha I think he thinks war is fun so he wants to go! In the the very first sentence " I was eleven years and and desperate to kill a Yankee before the supply ran out." I don't think he is going to war just to protect his home land I think he thinks war is fun. What do you think?

  10. I totally agree with you brian. I think that he is so crazy that he would risk his life at 11. I think that he should re think what he is doing and go back home.

  11. Toby Boyce's perspective on the civil war is that he thinks it's a good idea and as he said in the book "I was eleven years old and desperate to kill a yankee before the supply ran out." Toby wanted to join the war but he knew he would never pass for eighteen until he knew they needed musicians. He went to the army tent and tried out for the fife and got in for his spirit.
Toby is maybe not the smartest but brave very brave.

  12. I think Toby is a silly fool. Toby's perspective on the civil war is that he thinks it's great because like he said in the book"I was 11 years old and desperate to kill a yankee before the supply runs out". Toby wants to be in the war but he knows that he can't because he is to young and he will never pass for 18.

  14. I think that Toby Boyce is both a silly fool and courages. He is courageous because he is only eleven and wants to go to war and when I think of going to war at this age I would think of it being a bad thing because at that age you are young and you would not actually be able to live your life. Toby just wants to go out and fight and kill yankees but could not but at least he got part of what he hoped for.

  19. I think that Toby Boyce is a courageous kid, because he is going to war and he is only eleven years old. Toby's perspective about the civil war is that he is determined to kill a yankee. While they are traveling Toby fears for his life because a lot of the men had gotten drunk, and were doing some freaky things. That's why I think that Toby was courageous to go to war.

  20. I think he is not a fool because he wanted to kill a Yankee and if we where him we would want to kill a Yankee as well. What is happing with toby is he wantes to be in the war but he is to young to go into the war so he joined the band but whene he got the songes he would not end at the same time and when he played a different song he would end first befor every one. Toby's perspective about the civil war is that he wantes to kill someone on the north side.

  22. I think Toby is a courageous kid because he got in front of all those people and made an attempt to play the fife. I also thinks that he thinks that the war is a fun place and he'll kill a Yankee and have fun while doing it. I think the newspaper led him to believe this because it just talks about the battle and not what the soldiers are feeling and what happens at camp.

If he did die only his family and friends would miss him no one else. He has made stupid choices and shouldn't have done everything he has. He doesn't really know how to play fife and should quit before anything bad happens.

He chose to play the Fife but when he played it people put their jackets over their heads to toby could not see them laughing. He played sooooo bad but he would do anything to get into the war and kill himself a Yankee.

  30. I thinkToby Boyce is a silly fool but also courages because he wanted to go into war to kill a Yankee. But he is also a silly fool because he is 11 years old and he wants to go into the war where he can be killed. That's not a way to live a little 11 year old boys life. Another way she is courageous because he just wants to get into the war anyway that he can even if it is playing an instrument he has never played before..............

  32. I think that Toby has a lot of courage but is a fool at the same time to join a band at age eleven, he would be risking his life at such a young age, and this is all because he wants to kill a Yankee. I think that Toby's perspective on the war is that it is not that bad.
Toby tried to play the fife but did not know how to play so some people laughed while he played. He practiced and practiced and soon got in to the band. The men were al lot older that him and got drunk.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Toby boyce could be a massive fool for wanting to kill the yankees and wanting to go to war . Or is he just a boy looking for something to do. I guess what toby doesn't see is that people get killed in the war its very dangerous for people especially kids. I think that toby has to much confidence in him. ((Thats probably the reason that he wanted to go to war and kill a yankee.)) No matter if he lives or dies he should know what he got himself into by just having to much confidence.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think Toby Boyce has lost his marbles and will never find them ever again! If I was eleven I would want to learn origami or something, not murdering someone that you barely know. Toby's perspective on the Civil War is that he wants to fight but he doesn't exactly need to and have to. He really wants to fight because because his grandfather gave him some encouraging words, that got him pumped up to fight and kill.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think he is a courageous kid. I think this because he didn't know what war really was like. He was influenced by what he thought war was like. Everyone knew it is a honor and a good thing to kill the enemy. Toby wanted to help out. Everyone also knew that there was a possibility that you would get killed in war, too. I believe that Toby knew all these things, but he still took the risk to help the Rebels. He just really wants to kill a Yankee. This was influenced by the people who recruited soldiers. They make war sound so glorious and amazing, when the truth is that it isn't really that. Using this image to entice future soldiers, the recruiters spread it. It eventually gets to children, too. This is where Toby's image came from.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think he is a silly fool because he was wanting to go to war but they did not except him but he got stuck with the fife

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think Toby Boyce is not thinking what other people are thinking. For example the Yankees want to kill one of the Confederates and so Toby could get killed in the war. With his fife, Toby can't kill anything but he gets to be in the war. I think Toby Boyce should wait a couple of years before he kills somebody because eleven is too young to kill someone. I think he was exaggerating when he said "all Georgia had joined except me."

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Brigid, you are right that he is exaggerating, His dad didn't to to the war either.I don"t think he should play the fife because he lied that he just wanted to play the fife. He wanted to kill a Yankee.

  38. I think Toby Boyce is insane because he just wants to go to war to kill a Yankee . He needs to check in with himself and make sure he is doing the right thing. Toby says, "I was eleven years old and desperate to kill a Yankee before the supply ran out." I think eleven year old kids shouldn't be killing people because they are too young and there is a fifty percent chance that he will get killed in the war.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that Toby is just a little crazy that he wants to go to war at such a young age. Really the only reason why he wanted to join the army is because he wanted to kill himself a Yankee before they were all dead or runaway. But when he went to the recruiting station to join the recruitment office said he could only play an instrument so he decided to play the fife and he ended up practicing day in and day out. Then he got good enough to play in the band he went right in back and joined the band and he became one of the best in the band.
