Gideon Adams #2

Now that we are into the second entry for Gideon, the prompts will change slightly. Obviously, we will see perspectives change, feel free to continue to comment on earlier ideas.

Gideon Adams makes a series of decisions or choices in this chapter. Do you think he is making good choices or not so good choices? Explain your ideas with examples with the book and/ or your experiences.

  1. I think that Gideon is making good choices because he is protecting his freedom

    1. I don't think that he is protecting his freedom as much as wanting to go to war. But otherwise good comment.

    5. The reason I think he is making good choices is because he applied to be up in the front line.

    6. Not much good choices he wanted to be in the front of the line so he was going to die first.

    7. I think it is a scary thing that Gideon did because he could get caught trying to be a white man.

Jonah, I think he is not making a good choice to pretend to be a white man because he might be hung.

  2. I think his courage and determination are commendable but deceiving the military is dangerous because if he gets caught he could be imprisoned or hung. But if he gets in and they are losing a battle the army might let it slide if they need all hands on deck.

    1. I agree that Gideon's decisions are both courageous and dangerous. Don't you think there are greater implications though about who Gideon has become? Fleischman writes, "I was no longer who I was." and, "I left in a daze, glancing at the white men around me, who thought me one of them." Gideon is not just lying, he is pretending to be someone he isn't, a white man. What will happen to him if he survives the war?

  3. Gideon wants to serve his country and doesn't care what people say or think. So he covers up his head and body and try's to enlist. He does accomplish the task as a ditch digger while some of his friends sigh as cooks or teamsters. Gideon is excited about joining the union infantry and he is certain that he will stand in the front and fight.

    2. Good thoughts. Do you think that he made a good decision or a grave mistake? If he's discovered what do you think would happen to him? Good luck to him.

  4. I think that he is making a good choice. Because he is making it so that he can be free.

  5. I think that he is making a good choice and a bad choice because he is trying to be free and he is doing a good thing by being in the war, but at the same time he is doing a bad thing because he could get caught and people would know who he is and could get in a lot of trouble.

    3. I agree with you do you think that he just didn't want to be a slave anymore so he is taking a chance of dying in the war?

    4. Also I think he is just making a good choice because he should serve his country.

    5. Avery I agree with you and I think that might be why also, though even if I were him I would not want to die.

  6. I think that he made a brave choice but it was not very smart because he knows that he is going to die because he is going to be in the front of the battle. I think that he just wants to be a remebered hero. There are pros and cons to his choice because he might get caught in the middle of the battle and he might die in a way that he had not expected.

  7. Gideon Adams is not making good choices because right from the start, when he says "Infantry soldier. I said it firmly. Maybe a little to firm." I think he was making a bad impression by saying that he was a white man all together. Maybe he should just not join the war at all. He could get shot, much less be killed. Perhaps, he should just be a person who doesn't fight, just supply food and other essentials. What if he gets caught? I don't think he thought about that. I think that he just wanted to fight and help so much, he just forgot about important things. Why did he not just stand there and think for a second? I do not think Gideon was making a good choice because he could lose everything, including his life, especially in the front lines.

    1. Thats very inspirational. Is it because he wanted to be a hero, or was he fighting for whats right?

  10. I agree with that because he could get shot.

  11. Yes I think that may be why but I just think that he wants to be brave and he has a dream of doing that. He also could be trying to maybe find his relatives.

  12. I think it is a "tarrible" idea to prove his skin color dus not mean he is not stronge hi must know it in side.

  13. I think Gideon is very fortunate to have gotten into the army as a groomer but to have gotten a horse from a fallen cavalry man's horse. That meant the world to him to actually become a cavalry man would be pretty awesome.

  14. I think he made a good choice. He believes in fighting against the South. He really wanted to, no matter what. Something about the way he speaks tells me that if he settle for less, he would never forgive himself. He would not be able to live life the way he wanted to, even though it is a war life. I think it was a good decision for him, but he will probably be scarred once he actually goes to war. It was a clever plan that he came up with, but it puts him in a lot of danger. Not only is he throwing himself into war, he is also an unwanted man amidst his fellow soldiers. I fear that this will cause lots of controversy.

  15. I thank Gideon Adams is making a good choise because he wanted to jone the war and he did not want to be a cook or some other things he wanted to be a solger. But he was a slave but his skin coler was so light that he could pass as a white so on the first day he made hi self look like a white but his cap fell off and thay saw his hair witch ment that he was a slave by what his hair looked like. Then the next he made sure that his hair did not pop out of his cap and then the man said that he could but he could not sigh up his real name in the book that said what the solgers names are and then he all most sighed his real name but he put a differant one.
