Lily Malloy Post

We learn a number of things from Lily but not much about her. What do you think her perspective would be on the Civil War? Explain your idea(s) with examples and information from the chapter.

  1. Lilly Malloy has a very hard perspective on the civil war. she get's whipped from her dad even if she did not do anything that wrong.....I think she misses Patrick..and that she's scared for Patrick...I think that she is shocked about the war.

    2. I like your comment, Autumn. I agree with you about every thing accept that she's shocked about the war. I think she and her siblings knew it was coming otherwise patrick wouldn't have run away to fight in it.

  2. I think Lily's perspective on the civil war is that it could be a way to escape her father. Who whips all three of his children for anything they did bad in his sight or anything out of his sight he even whips them if they didn't do anything. And I also think that she thinks the war took her brother because after her father whipped him bad he left.

    1. I agree Josh, that Lily thinks war is a way to escape her father and her brother Patrick thought that too. Patrick ran away to the war to get away from the father so if the father never whipped him he probably would have stayed home. Lily's brother was smart when he left because he didn't want his father to catch him because "Minnesota is as flat as a cracker." So he took his spectacles as the father shares in the book "And that stone-hearted rogue took my spectacles with him!"

  3. Lilly Malloy has an impact on the Civil War because Lilly Malloy and her family got whipped from there father because there father went crazy. When there father was gone somewhere the family would work around the house and then when the father came home they got whipped by there dad. I think they have an impact war because they could maybe get away from there father.

  4. She is not a fan of the Civil War, she thought that it was bad. Her brother wants to go to the Civil War to help out. I think she is scared that her bother is going to get hurt.

  6. Lilly Malloy - I think that Lilly is scared that her brother is going to die in the War. She is probable about 10 years old. She is proud that her brother is fighting in the War.

  8. Lily's perspective about the Civil War is, she is from Minnesota where there is not a lot a battles because it is as flat as a cracker. (like she said) Then one day whene thay where on there way to church thay heard that the south had attcked Fort Summter. And then her fellings about the war is that it is closer then it really is because her brother had ran away to go to war and her father was really mad because her brother ran awat and he took his dads spectacles so that meand that her father is as blind as a bat.

  9. I think that she doesn't want her brother to be hurt. Since her family lives in Michigan I would assume that they want the north or union to win the war. I think that Patrick signed on to the army for the north.

    1. I think that patrick ran away because he wanted to have the excitement (so he thought) of war. He probably had a pretty crummy life on the farm where he got beaten every day.

  10. I am thinking she would be scared. Her brother ran away, leaving her and her siblings. Also the Father is the worst, he switched her siblings and her...sometimes he even switched them when they didn't do anything wrong. There Father was superstitious....thats what I think anyway. Plus she is probably worried about her brother.

    1. Willow,

I think that you did a really great job answering the question! geez! That father is crazy!

      Delete
    2. Great comment. I agree with you that the father is superstitious. Why do do think he took the spectacles? Watch the spelling of there is it there or their.

      Delete
    3. Well, the father is certainly not nice. Superstitious? I'm not sure. It might be his devotion to his religion. Needless to say, he is taking it to an extreme.

I think Father will be even more angry now that Patrick is gone, he will struggle to understand why his son would just leave. Mind you, I don't blame Patrick for taking off. The idea of taking Father's glasses is somewhat comical, an interesting twist.

  11. It sounds like Lily Malloy doesn't really care about the war, She cares more abut her brother that has ran away to go to the war. Her father was furious to find that Patrick had ran away. Patrick took his fathers spectacles with him so that his father couldn't find him.

  12. Lilly Malloy grew up in a rough family. She said that her and her siblings got switched everyday, even when they did not do anything. I think that Lilly wanted to escape from her father. Even when LIlly was working around he house, when her father came home she got whipped.

    1. I defiantly agree with you Kyle. I feel bad for her about her father.

  13. lilly's perspective is hard, because she gets switched every day, no matter what if she did not do any thing she would still get one, because if he did not see her do it he thinks that she must of done something, but its not just her its every slave that he ones. one day her brother Patrick goes to war even thou her "father" said no, so in the morn she wakes up and hears that he took his spectacles with him that way he could not see or track him down.

    1. I agree with you Erika because Lily and her six siblings always get switched everyday no matter what they do, even the littlest of things they still get switched when they didn't do anything and when the father wasn't looking.

    2. Erika, you didn't say what she thought about the war. So if i were u i would wright a little bit more about it.

    3. Mackenzie,
I agree. I think Lilly might be afraid that her brother might get shot in the war.

  14. Lilly's father spanked them for no reason. Lilly thinks that Patrick going to the War is good because he is getting away from his mean father.

  17. She does not know what to think about it she is 12 years old and she and Patrick are close.

  18. I think that Lily must want to run away from her father but she cannot. I also think she is very scared of her father because he is very stern and switches the children at the end of the day. I also think she is very scared/sad her brother ran away and left her with a hand made whistle but he also stole his fathers spectacles so his father would be blind.

  19. Lilly Malloy thinks that the Civil War is a far distance away. But, when her brother goes to war she knows its closer than she thought it would be. Example: She said that theCivil War is so far away. But it amazes me how much it affects us. But she is sad when her big brother who is 5 years older than her runs away to the Civil War.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think Lily Malloy's perspective on the Civil War is a bad one because her brother is on his way to fight in the War and she is stuck at home with her angry dad and her other brothers and sisters. Lily's dad can not see any thing with out his spectacles. Her brother was five years older than her but they were very close but she loved him the best. Lily's father is a mean man he wiped the kids even the baby did not get spared. He wiped them for any wrongs they did in the day. When Lily's brother ran away he took her father's spectacles with him.

  21. lily feels that the war is very far away from her home in minnesota. Until her brother Patrick decides to join the army. She was very sad that her brother went to war.Patrick took his dads glasses with him so his father could not hut him down .

  22. Lily Malloy tells a lot about everything else but herself.
Why doesn't she tell anything about herself, she tells us about how Minnesota is flat as a cracker and how on a chill April Sunday fort sumpter had been attacked.

I think she is against the civil war because she and her family live in Minnesota which has very little slaves there.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that Lilly Malloy will think both ways about war. She thinks that war will be a bad thing because her dad was in war and he fled and if he gets found he will be badly beaten and that is one of the reasons why she thinks that war is a bad this. Another reason why she thinks that it is a bad thing is that people will be hurt and there is a lot of commotion and she is problebly over whelmed. Lilly might also think that it is a good thing because it might settle things and the slaves will be free.

Thats what I think that Lilly's perspective on war would be.

  24. I think Lily Malloy's perspective on the civil war would be that she is against it because she doesn't have any slaves and lives in Minnesota.
Lily malloy's father whips LIly and her six siblings every day no matter what they do.
Lilly's brother patrick joined the army when they needed more soldiers so he can get away from the whipping and help his country but the dad didn't want him to go so he stole the dads glasses so the dad couldn't make him come back. But I think Patrick died in war.

    1. Hannah I completely agree with you that she is against it.
Why do you think Patrick died in the war?

    2. good piece but maybe make the perspective of patrick a little longer and the glasses part didn't make scence but i think you tried to say he couldn't see him?

    3. Gabby I think that Patrick died in the war because most people died in the war didn't they? Thats what I think because it was unusual for some one to live.

  26. I think that lily is against the war and lily is scared that she will lose her brother in the war. I think that she is scared that she will get switched bye her father no matter what she says to him. Her father is already furious because patrick ran away, but he is going to want to find out were he is going and what lily knows.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Do you now why he was like that

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lily Malloy refers to minnesota as flat as a cracker with almost no trees
Her father whips them if they do there work wrong because that's what he believes in.
Her perspective on the civil war is she does not very much care for it she is mostly concerned about her father and the work she does.
But when her brother gets whiped another time the father yells you're thinking of running away!
but patrick sees the civil war as a chance to get away from his father. so he runs away and takes his fathers glasses so he cant see him.

  29. I think Lily Malloy's perspective that the Civil War is a cold, unnecessary, war that gives nothing but hate. Lily must hate it when her father whips her when she does nothing wrong. Her father whips her and her six siblings when they do something wrong that he sees. Her father also whips them when he doesn't see them because he must think that they are doing something behind his back. So when Patrick steals his spectacles, she must be really scared because he might take out all his anger on her.

  30. I think that Lily Malloy does not like the war! I also think that her family was not fond of the war! Also I thin that lily's father not going to let her patrick go to war. I think that Patrick is going to go to the war. To save the state the are living in!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Lily Malloy's sees the war as a mean and horrible place. I think that she wouldn't dislike the war as much as she dose now that her brother Patrick decided to join. He didn't just join he ran away from home. He gave Lily his whistle before he left. She is even more worried wondering if her father will find him. If he dose Patrick will be switched with no sympathy.

  32. Lily Malloy's perspective about the civil war would be that she is against the civil war because she doesn't own any slaves and she lives in Minnesota. Lily Malloy's father whips Lily and her six siblings everyday no matter what they do ,even the littlest of things, he thinks they did something wrong when he wasn't looking.Lily Malloy's father thinks god put willows here that man might have switches to enforce His commanders, he is wrong. How was Lily holding a whistle that Patrick made when she awoke at dawn?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think Lily malloy is going to show up in the end of the the book and tell more about her but not much about her. Lily malloy is against the civil war after Patrick left she did not want Patrick to die.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Why did Patrick run away to war? I think it was probably to get away from his father beating him. I think his sister Lilly was not happy that Patrick ran off to war, she would want to go off to war with her brother.I think Patrick will support the Union because he is against slavery, he has been treated like a slave by his father and now wants to fight against it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think Lily Malloy is being nonsense by saying minnesota is flat as a cracker. Mr.Nelson read a newspaper that said fort Sumter was attacked. She is white. I think she encourages slavery because she is a white

    ReplyDelete
  36. Poor kids I know it was right back then but I still feel bad for them. Also Patrick wanted to go to war so it was first it was his want. Then the push of his farther like Patrick does not want to be beaten anymore and he wants to go. So he thought the best thing to do is leave so he left.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think Lily would be against the war within itself. Minnesota was not very populated during that time. She was also in the North. Lily probably never have seen a Negro-run plantation farm in her life. Its sounds like she was born and raised in Minnesota, because her father sounds very attached to the nature, namely the trees. He sounds too attached to have recently moved their. Since Patrick is 19 and Lily is five years apart. She could be 24 or 12, but I think 12. I think this because her father still beats her. I hardly think he would do that to a 24 year old, who would probably be married. Using this conclusion, Lily is too young to have done much traveling. She isn't experienced enough to have a strong opinion about the war. We do know that she loves her brother a lot and the prospect of fighting in a war pulled him away from her. He left home to join the Rebels. I think that Lily doesn't like the war because of this.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lily seems almost all proper and respectful the way she talks. It's hard to view her perspective on the war, but i'm inferring she's against it, but at the same time wants the Union to win, because she's from the north. She seems to enjoy nature, and likes to be outside, like some teenage girls do. I think she misses her brother, because he wen't and fought in the war, and this is probably why she doesnt like it.

    1. Good job explaining your ideas Matt. It is hard to figure Lily out. I wonder if we will learn more about how she truly feels. She certainly keeps her views to herself. Over the course of the story, she will probably stay on the fence, not completely in favor, not completely not in favor. I bet that her brother's experiences will influence her. We'll have to wait and see.
