James Dacy Post

James Dacy has a very different perspective and experience than the Wheelworth women. What is James' perspective as he is leaving Massachusetts? Do you think his perspective changed as he traveled south? Explain your ideas using examples from the story.

  1. I think James feels a little proud to be along with the soldiers. His perspective definitely changed as he traveled south when he got attacked by Confederate supporters. In a way it was his first battle but unfortunately he couldn't do his job because his hands were shaking with rage.

  2. James was sent with the union soldiers from boston to sketch for the paper. But when they get baltimore there not praised or greeted they saw confederate flags and banners. The people started throwing food at them and then stones from the street. In all the confusion one man next to james got hit in the head with a stone and died. James felt fury in him so he took his partners musket and they were ordered to fire on the mob. James got his first glimpse of war he hates it because of the man that died next to him.

    1. I think that when JD says "the man next to me was struck and sank to his knees" was he thankful that it wasn't him? I would be scared and pick up the gun and run to the train. I would be pretty mad to but more stunned that I watched someone die. Thats one of the reasons I think Toby Boyce is so crazy. What would you do?

    2. I would probably take the musket and help the other union men fire on the mob. But it would be a little shocking to see your friends die when you're supposed to see people in the town that are on you're side.

  3. I think that he is happy to be a soldier. I think that his perspective of leaving massachusetts is a happy thing and also a bad thing. Because he is going to leave massachusetts to be a soldier.
YES because... he got attacked by the confederate supporters. It was his first battle. And he couldn't do his job because his hands where shaking!

  4. His perspective about the cival war is that he is happy to be a soldier. I think his perspective about leaving massachusetts was a good one. But that means he is in the war and he might be killed. This is his first war and he is is scared he could not even draw.

  5. I think he is very fortunate to have gotten so many sketches of the army and his surroundings. I also think he is very unfortunately to have found a General shouting commands at trees from a book.

  6. I think he is really lucky to have gotten so many sketches of the army and his surroundings. I also think he is really unlucky to have found a General shouting commands at trees from a book.

  7. He thinks it was a spectacle when they left, but after they got unofficially attacked, he felt angry. He was expecting war to not start as soon as it did, in Baltimore. He was excited to get people to see the war as he did. This did change as he went south. While in Massachusetts, they were sent off with a warm crowd of people. When they were in Baltimore, they were stoned and shot at. The regiment was not expecting that.

  8. He is lucky to get so many drawings. I also think that it was a happy thing for him to be going, I think that he might feel a little scared because he is seeing everyone around the train but everything was changed, like his feelings of the war.

  10. I personally don't think James personality is the same. The reason i think that is because when that guy killed the other guy, he said "being from Boston" he grabbed a bat and headed into the fight. I bet that he thinks the war is a crazy thing because he was just taking a picture of the guy and he drops died from a gun shot. So I bet he thinks it's terrifying and crazy. Not like MA, where someone just takes a gun and shoots at a person...randomly.

  11. James dacy just watches everything and then he draws it. James was watching the Union doing very difficult drills and he thought to himself "nobody could best the union". Later that day James walked toward another camp and had his faith severely shaken. He saw a police officer reading a book while shouting orders at a tree! James decided not to present this to every body else. A tree doesn't move, so once the officer is shouting orders to real people he could lead them into a lot of trouble. I think that james is pretty troubled.

  12. Well James Dacy really is really a camera man but in this place he is drawing pictures. On day he was at camp and he saw a police officer yelling at a tree, but James decided not to tell anybody else. If you think about it, it is actually kinda funny because when he tells the tree to move... the tree wouldnt because it is a tree. So when he is yelling at real people, it might not go well.

  13. James Dacy is an artist. He is excited about joining the war effort. When he reaches Baltimore people start throwing stones and rocks at the Yankee soldiers. Then someone shoots at them and his neighbor falls. James "snatched up the martyr's gun, hot for revenge." He is angry that the mob killed three people before they even reached the battle.

  14. I think James Dacy is a lucky man because he got good drawings. I think that James was happy about his army until he heard a voice then... "I'd come upon an officer, no doubt one of the many inexperience civilians elected to his post. He was pouring over a book and was practicing shouting orders to the trees." James thinks the officer should already know how to give orders. It frightens him that the officer is inexperienced.

  15. james longed to render his paintings in color to show, the red blouses ,of the garibaldi guards. so you can tell he didn't have any colors.

  16. James Dacy is a sketch artist in the sixth Massachusetts Regiment but wen he gets to Virginia he gets a nasty surprise. A mob of angry Southerns are gathered around the reginment throwing vegetables and rocks and the men were ordered to fire on the crowd.
