Dietrich Herz loves the Union, it has given him and his countrymen a "new life". A new life is a good thing, is going to war going to help him continue the "new life" or will it end it?
I think that there is the risk that it will tkae his life like many others. He feels at home because he is with other Germans so he doesn't feel quite as awkward, more at home with the fellow German men. In all honesty I would not think that going to war would make for a "new" life, but maybe it would make more future oppritunities to him available if he lives to the future. I guess it is almost a new life for him to because he finally feels at home, more comfortable. He also may not really have been so comfortable before as he would be with the Germans so he would feel more at home. Personally, I would not be able to think of going to war as a new life but he also may be thinking from the perspective of changed man like roughed up and expeirenced soldier to be proud of himself. I wouldn't think of it as a new life because we have been learning about the horrible occurances in war and the death tolls, so I would not be able to have much confidence in living through it.

I think that it could be a new life because maybe he will survive and everyone will be thankful and he will never feel the same again, he will feel greater in life. Then again he is risking his life and may just live on to be one of the guys that died during war and not much will come of him. Dietrich kind of has a new life since he has not really gone to war before and it is a new life and a new thing to have happen.
Yes I do agree and I also don't agree! The parts that I agree on is the part that he is risking his life and he might be one of the people that live! I think it will end it because... You normaly dont make it after the war! And I think that it will start him a new life! But than again he is risking his life. And might live to see there family again!
