Judah Jenkins p. 33/34

Judah shares insight about famous people that are remembered (Col. Elmer Ellsworth) and others who are not (James Jackson). Why do you think some people or groups of people are remembered and others are not? Who decides?

  1. I think that some people are rembered based on what they did in the war some people did the same thing but maybe the other people did it better and they remember them for what they did in the war

  2. I think people like Colonel Elmer Ellsworth or General Lee or Abraham Lincoln would later be remembered because they were the generals or even the president. Often we only here about the generals and not really the soldiers who went and actually fought, I think this is partly because they had such bad records at the time. Also, I think that it may not neccessarily someone who decides, well I am not sure. I know that often times textbooks and such will not refer to how the North had it so that when the slaves were freed from the origonal masters there was almost nowhere were they were welcom and we said we would pay them but twisted the deal on what we paid them for their labor. Things like that are hardly put in textbooks, possibly just because it sounds bad on the North's part and we want to be remembered as the slavery heroes. I think for the most part what we hear now, is mostly determined by the textbook companies, I think back then it was more of a game of "telephone" and people almost only heard the parts they wanted to hear. I feel kinda bad for those soldiers who went and fought, but still many of us can't name more than 5 or 6 who fought. It was because there were thousands and thousands of people fighting so we can not print all those names, or have them all recorded. So, I think in the end people just took the "figure-heads" like generals and presidents.

  3. I think some people are remembered and some not because maybe they didn't do as much as other people or maybe because General Lee and Abraham Lincoln, they would be remembered because they were important people since they were generals and presidents.

  4. Good points by both of you, some people are remembered by what they did, others are remembered for who they are. One thing that historians have noticed is that the people that won the battle or ended up ahead were the ones that told the story. So, we tend to see the winning side talking about their greatness. In the Civil War, though, the South was able to get across their message about their heroes and their greatness too. It's an interesting facet of this conflict. Thanks again to both of you for joining the conversation.
